Birding 101 & 102: A Beginner Birding Series at Jarvis Creek Park
Have you ever wondered how birders seem to spot birds so quickly—or wished you could identify more of the birds in your own backyard? Join a Hilton Head Audubon Master Birder for a fun, beginner-friendly two-part birding series at beautiful Jarvis Creek Park.
No experience necessary. In fact, absolute beginners are especially welcome. This series was created specifically for people who are new to birding and may not know where to start. Many experienced birders began with a single bird walk and a lot of questions, and we're happy to help you take those first steps in a friendly, supportive environment.
Designed especially for new birders, this series will help you build confidence and develop the skills needed to enjoy birding anywhere—from your backyard to local nature trails.
Part 1: Birding 101 – Discovering the Birds Around Us
In our first session, we'll focus on the fundamentals of birding. Participants will learn how to use binoculars effectively, find birds more easily, and recognize common local species. We'll explore simple identification clues such as size, shape, behavior, habitat, and color patterns while enjoying a relaxed morning stroll through the park.
Part 2: Birding 102 – Building Your Birding Skills
In our follow-up session, we'll put those new skills into practice. We'll review key concepts, tackle some identification challenges, learn a few birding-by-ear techniques, and encourage participants to make more of the identifications themselves. By the end of the series, you'll have a stronger foundation and more confidence for enjoying future bird walks and outdoor adventures.
Why so early? Summer mornings are one of the best times to observe birds, when they are most active and vocal. The cooler temperatures also make for a much more comfortable walk before the day's heat arrives.
Bring binoculars if you have them. A limited number of beginner binoculars will be available to borrow. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring water. We expect to walk up to 1½ miles over approximately two hours at a leisurely pace with frequent stops.
Meet at the fishing pier near the restrooms.
Whether you've never picked up a pair of binoculars or simply want a refresher, we'd love to help you discover the joy of birding. Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions, but each walk may also be enjoyed as a standalone experience.
CAPACITY IS LIMITED TO 12 PEOPLE.
